These are my guinea pigs |
i have always been a lover of animals. if you look on my 50 facts about me post you will see that i have had a lot of animals in my 19 years of life in which i currently have 4 guinea pigs. so as i have had all of these animals i have learnt a lot about them though observation and research, and i often get asked by friends and family; 'my ______ is doing this what does it mean?' or 'am i allowed to feed my ______ this? etc. so i thought i would share my knowledge.
please remember that i am only 19 i am not a veterinarian so i am only going off of what i have observed and researched either though books or by asking my vet and pet store.
this one is going to be about Guinea pigs as i just said that i have 4, and i also know they are a very popular pet.
First things first i am going to talk about the sounds they make. Now they make quite a few sounds on a regular basis and like us they all mean different things.
- Purring
they do this in two different tones. if it is quite a low tone then this means they are happy or content weather they are purring at you or at another guinea pig. The other tone is considered a 'durr' noise as it still is a purr however this one tends to be a sudden and a short purr. they tend to do this if they are afraid by a sudden noise.
- Weeking
this is the sound you will probably hear most often because they will normally make this sound when they want feeding. it's basically them saying 'is it dinner time yet mum, can we have some dinner now' and if your guinea pigs are anything like mine, they are always hungry. My guinea pigs make this sound whenever they hear some sort of bag rustle whether it is dinner time or not.
- Moaning
like us humans Guinea pigs moan too and for the same reasons. for example if one of them is resting and is then disturbed or if one is eating some hay out of the rack and the other one wants some too but can't get there. you will be able to tell that your guinea pig is moaning because it will start off fairly quiet gradually getting louder if the intrusive pig doesn't get the message. they will moan at anyone or anything that is annoying them so if you are doing something that you piggie doesn't like they will moan at you to let you know. normally it won't turn aggressive with you or other piggies unless nobody takes any notice
- Mutter
so guinea pigs like to make a little noise that kind of sounds like they are muttering to themselves, and maybe they are we don't know. it is quite easy to distinguish. if they are just walking around minding their own business and they make a little chattering noise then they are muttering to themselves. this is harmless they are just very happy and content little piggies.
- Shrieking
now this isn't a nice sound because this means they are in distress and possibly hurt so if you ever hear your guinea pig make this noise you need to attend to them right away. you will be able to tell if it is a shriek because it will be very high pitched and extremely loud.
- Teeth Chattering
this is self explanatory. it is kind of like when we are cold in the winter and our teeth chatter except they don't do it because they are cold. they do it because they are annoyed/ angry.
- Rumbling
it is normally males that do this to romance the female in which it kind of sounds like a purr but with a vibration too.
sorry this was such a long post but i hope it helps if you want me to do a specific animal or you want to ask me a question regarding your pet then please feel free to leave a comment below or email me.
